Chapter 34 The Moment of Shifting Blame
Chapter 34 The Moment of Shifting Blame
When Peter came out of the police station, he learned that the guy he had caught was actually Dmitry Snellgakov, a former top agent of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service who had defected to the United States and was now wanted by the federal government for multiple counts of employee murder and theft of trade secrets.
Chameleon is considered a classic Spider-Man villain, although his abilities are really... quite insignificant. He's basically a low-budget version of Mystique; in the comics and animations, he even needs his belt to take photos while transforming.
Although it seems that the world doesn't need it now, according to the police chief, this guy replaced his face with some kind of black technology mask from the former Soviet Union and no longer has his true face—but strangely enough, this disguised person actually uses his real name.
"Anyway, this little imposter incident is done. It's a pity that Mysterio seemed a bit too vigilant and cut off the connection when I tried to hack into his device—but since his light particle display can't fool thermal imaging, taking him down might not be too difficult."
Peter glanced at the time after leaving the NYPD and hurried towards the school, hoping not to be late if nothing went wrong on the way.
Meanwhile, inside the NYPD, two police officers watched with great curiosity as they boredly changed their appearance in the detention cell. One second they were curly-haired policewomen, and the next they were bald detectives with skin that writhed like liquid metal.
"So why don't we just take this guy's mask off?"
"Didn't you hear what the chief just said? This guy has replaced his face with high-tech one; there's no way to remove it."
The two police officers on surveillance were talking when two unfamiliar colleagues approached. One of them flashed his badge and said, "The chief is looking for you. It's time to change shifts."
After the two men were out of sight, the two policemen took out their keys and opened the door to the detention cell.
"Dmitri, Mr. Wesker is very dissatisfied with your failure." The corrupt cop who opened the door glanced at him sideways. "The video in the detention room now is a pre-recorded video. You can leave now. Mr. Wesker is waiting for your reply."
Chameleon lazily stood up, his skin rippled, perfectly replicating the appearance of one of the guards. He tugged at his uniform collar: "If Fisk knew that Spider-Man's new suit could see through holograms, he wouldn't have used the word 'failure'."
The corrupt cop who had been imitated obediently walked into the detention cell and sat down. Chameleon followed another corrupt cop out, asking as they went, "Where are the others? Like that damn Quentin Baker and McDonald Gagan?!"
"They're already at the safe house, of course, and they're just waiting for you."
As the two walked outside, talking, Dimitri suddenly noticed a small spot of light flickering on the corrupt cop's face and casually reminded him, "Someone outside is aiming at us. I saw the reflection on your face."
"What?"
The corrupt cop instinctively dodged, but it was too late. In that instant, a bullet that had pierced through the wall struck him squarely in the head. The chameleon, who had reacted quickly and dodged, moved along the wall, muttering to himself.
"Even if you have to run for your life, don't rush, especially don't rush in front of him."
The sudden shooting set off alarms throughout the police station, and a large number of officers rushed to the scene and the perimeter. Outside the NYPD building, the shooter stared grimly at the information from his device; the unusual bullet had not destroyed any electrically charged equipment—in other words, Chameleon had not been killed.
At that moment, the police drone took off and captured footage of the shooter—he was wearing a black leather trench coat over a black short-sleeved shirt with a huge white skull painted on it. He was carrying a menacing anti-materiel sniper rifle, but he merely glanced indifferently at the drone's camera before quickly leaving. With the accompanying footage, the entire police station descended into near madness.
"It's Frank Castle! Everyone on high alert! Everyone on high alert!"
Chameleon, who had already infiltrated the police force, seized the opportunity to escape. He was certain that he had been targeted by the infamous "Punisher" once again, and if he wanted to survive, he had to find Kingpin. As for the Punisher, there was no need to worry about him for the time being; although the guy was a madman, he wouldn't just open fire indiscriminately.
Chameleon then found a police car, skillfully drove away, found a shopping mall and went inside. A few minutes later, a completely unrelated person came out, looked around calmly, and then headed to Kingpin's properties in Hell's Kitchen.
Several hours later, the chameleon finally returned to its base and completely removed its disguise, revealing a white mask attached to its face, with only blurred facial features visible.
As soon as he returned, he launched into a tirade against the incompetent detective.
"What were you investigating? None of that is correct!"
"I told you yesterday that Spider-Man has a new suit, but you wouldn't listen!"
Of course, Gagan wouldn't take the blame, and directly shifted the blame to Quentin. To this, the timid and cowardly special effects artist immediately shook his head like a rattle-drum.
"It has nothing to do with me! I don't have any photos or have seen Spider-Man's new suit. There's simply no way to create a new model and project it onto every scene in such a short time."
"So you mean I have a problem?"
Gagan grabbed Quentin and pulled him to his feet, launching into a tirade. Quentin, terrified, quickly waved his hands in apology, but Dimitri's grip was clear: "It's your fault, you damn useless detective. Do you know how Spider-Man beat me up? With thermal imaging! You said Spider-Man was a damn poor kid who couldn't afford high-tech gear, and what happened? I got a good beating!"
"How am I supposed to know where he got his high-tech equipment? Hmm? The day before yesterday, when he was fighting that scary guy, he was wearing a tattered nylon outfit!"
"Alright, I didn't call you here to argue."
Kingpin's slow but authoritative roar silenced the three people present. The Hell's Kitchen Emperor, who had somehow arrived at the scene, looked at the three people he had spent a considerable amount of money to invite and didn't know whether to be angry or disappointed.
"I invited you here to eliminate Spider-Man! To eliminate this guy who's caused so much trouble for my...business, not for you to stand here and pass the buck."
Kingpin said with a hint of disappointment, then sighed helplessly, "If your framing plan doesn't work, Mr. Dimitri, we'll try another one. If Spider-Man sees you imitating him again, he'll definitely come after us. We can arrange something, like an empty construction site, or a bridge, and use bombs, lots and lots of bombs, to lure Spider-Man into a trap and blow him up."
"Things aren't that simple. I have some grudges with Frank Cassel, and he's got his eye on me now."
Upon hearing this name, even Kingpin remained silent for several seconds before finally sighing.
"Then just show us how Spider-Man is a superhero, fight crime properly, let him know you've escaped, and let him come find us for the rest."
