Chapter 27: Double Ironclad Evidence, The Tragedy of Mingdu
The next morning. Mingdu.
Although the assassination attempt last night was quickly quelled, the cordon around the Divine Craftsman's Mansion remained in place, very tight. Large searchlights swept across the ruins, and federal military police in white uniforms carefully moved the scrap metal. The air was thick with the pungent smell of sulfur, along with an indescribable, unsettling energy fluctuation.
The atmosphere on the top floor of the Federal Parliament building was oppressive, like the calm before a storm.
Mo Runshu sat in the main seat, his golden hair no longer looking warm in the morning light, but rather exuding a cold, metallic feel. His heterochromatic eyes held nothing but unfathomable coldness. Yue Mianmian sat beside him, her silver hair hanging down, her usually piercing eyes lowered, as if she couldn't bear to watch what was about to happen.
Three people sat across the long table, each with a different expression.
One, dressed in a green robe, with a refined appearance, was Luo Zhentian, the chief representative of Shrek Academy's Federal Office and one of the elders of the Sea God Pavilion. Another, an old man in a Tang Clan-made cloud-patterned long robe, with a thin face and deep-set eyes, was Xu Xingchen, the head of the Tang Clan's branch in Mingdu. The last one, dressed in a white robe, exuded the air of someone from a high-ranking family, with the Spirit Pagoda emblem pinned to his chest, and a sinister gaze. He was Yang Poxu, the head of the Spirit Pagoda's Mingdu branch and also Qian Gu Dongfeng's deputy.
Mo Runshu spoke first, his voice not loud, but it sounded like a hammer blow.
"The three of you should all know about what happened last night. Master craftsman Zhenhua, a national treasure of the Federation and a level nine blacksmith, was almost killed by a group of evil soul masters right in the middle of Mingdu. If my men hadn't arrived in time, Mingdu would be a sea of fire by now."
Luo Zhentian frowned and said, "Speaker Mo, we are also very sorry about this. Shrek Academy and evil spirit masters have always been irreconcilable enemies, and we also hate what the Holy Spirit Cult did. But we don't know why the Speaker summoned us here?"
"What is it?" Mo Runshu sneered, suddenly standing up, his golden hair moving without wind. "I want to ask you! I want to ask Shrek Academy, I want to ask the Tang Sect, and I want to ask the Spirit Pagoda!"
His gaze, sharp as a knife, swept across the three faces, his voice suddenly rising. "You are the most powerful forces on the continent, claiming to be the guardians of justice. But how did a titled Douluo from the Holy Spirit Cult infiltrate Mingdu? Why would you set up a trap in a place like the Divine Craftsman's Mansion? Where are your surveillance teams? Where are your sentries? Are they all just for show?"
Luo Zhentian's expression changed, and he wanted to explain, but Mo Runshu didn't give him the chance.
"Don't talk to me about 'negligence'!" Mo Runshu walked down the steps and stood in front of the three, looking down at them. "Ten thousand years ago! Also in this Mingdu, it was your predecessors from Shrek Academy and Tang Sect, or forces related to you, who caused that 'Mingdu Great Explosion' that shocked the continent!"
He pointed at the city outside the window, his eyes blazing with fury. "That time, the sun and moon were obliterated, and countless people died. The entire capital was nearly razed to the ground; so many innocent people perished in the explosion. That was the darkest day in the history of the Sun Moon Empire, a permanent scar on the hearts of the Federation's people." He paused. "Now, you want to do it again? Do you think the lessons of that year weren't enough? You want to bomb Mingdu again, to make history repeat itself?"
Xu Xingchen, who had remained silent until now, stood up. He rose slowly, his gaze calm yet sharp. "Speaker Mo, watch your words. The Tang Clan was also a victim of that incident. Our ancestors sacrificed a great deal to avert that catastrophe. Isn't it going too far to use something from ten thousand years ago to pressure us?"
"Victims?" Mo Runshu's lips curled into a mocking smile. He casually tossed a thick report onto the table, which slid down to Xu Xingchen with a clatter. "Minister Xu, you are the Tang Clan's head in Mingdu, and also a master of forging and hidden weapons. Come and see what the Federal Military Police found in the ruins of Zhenhua Mansion last night."
Xu Xingchen frowned and picked up the report. She only glanced at it before her face turned pale. Her hands began to tremble, and cold sweat instantly beaded on her forehead.
"This... is impossible..." His voice trembled.
"Impossible?" Mo Runshu's voice suddenly exploded, like thunder. "Then let me read this list to you!"
"Twenty fragments of a level 9 fixed-position soul-guided shell! Twelve fragments of a level 10 fixed-position soul-guided shell! Two fragments of a level 11 fixed-position soul-guided shell!"
Each number read aloud felt like a hammer blow to Xu Xingchen's heart.
Mo Runshu pointed at his nose, his eyes blazing with fury. "Xu Xingchen, tell me, what's with all this debris on the ground? The Federation's highest-level appraisal team has confirmed that the core array patterns on these shells bear your Tang Sect's unique 'cloud pattern' markings! They're your specially made, fixed-position soul-guided shells!"
"This is a frame-up!" Xu Xingchen jumped to his feet, his voice hoarse from shouting. "Although the Tang Clan can make hidden weapons, level 11 fixed-position soul-guided cannon shells are legendary items; even headquarters only has a handful. How could they possibly be here? It's definitely a forgery by the Holy Spirit Cult!"
"A forgery?" Mo Runshu laughed angrily. "A level eleven fixed-position soul-guided cannon shell—that's equivalent to a quasi-god's full-force attack! Aside from those old monsters in your Tang Sect who harbor secrets for millennia, who could create such a thing? Who could forge it so convincingly?"
He whirled around, his gaze turning even colder as he looked at Yang Poxu. "And you, Yang Poxu. The Spirit Pagoda is the Federation's officially certified regulatory body for evil spirit masters, responsible for investigating and purifying evil spirit masters across the continent. How could the Ghost Emperor of the Holy Spirit Cult possess such power?"
Yang Poxu's face paled, and he quickly stood up. "Speaker Mo, the Holy Spirit Cult operates in secrecy; they excel at—"
"Don't mention infiltration to me!" Mo Runshu interrupted directly, throwing another stack of high-definition photos in front of Yang Poxu. "Let me tell you what the Federal Appraisal Team discovered in last night's battle footage. The Ghost Emperor of the Holy Spirit Cult unleashed his final trump card during the fight. His eighth and ninth spirit rings are orange-gold! Those are beast-level spirit rings!"
Upon hearing this, both Luo Zhentian and Xu Xingchen gasped in shock.
Mo Runshu pointed at Yang Poxu's nose, his eyes blazing with anger. "Yang Poxu, tell me, what's going on? Orange-gold spirit rings can only be provided by ferocious beasts over 200,000 years old. According to the laws of the Spirit Pagoda, spirit contracts of ferocious beast level must be approved by the highest level of headquarters, and the entire process must be personally supervised by the Pagoda Master. Why does the Ghost Emperor, an evil spirit master, a criminal wanted by the entire continent, have two orange-gold spirit rings? Who made the contract for him? Who leaked this forbidden technology to the Holy Spirit Cult?"
Yang Poxu's legs went weak, and he almost collapsed to the ground. He opened his mouth, but no sound came out.
Mo Runshu didn't give them a chance to explain. With a flick of his sleeve, a burst of soul power exploded, forcing the three of them back several steps.
"The evidence is all there, no need to say more." Mo Runshu's voice sounded like a sentencing. "I'm only giving you three days. Within three days, I want to see the Tang Sect hand over an explanation for the origin of these shells, and the Spirit Pagoda hand over an explanation for the origin of those two orange-gold spirit rings. Shrek Academy, in cooperation with the Federal Military Police, will conduct a thorough investigation of all spirit masters in the city."
He paused for a moment.
"If you can't do that, don't blame the Federation for being ruthless. I will personally propose to the parliament to abolish the regulatory authority over the Spirit Pagoda, list the Tang Sect as a terrorist organization, list Shrek Academy as a hostile force, expel them from Mingdu, and freeze all your assets within the Federation."
"You—" Yang Poxu and Xu Xingchen trembled with anger, but dared not retaliate. This was the Federal Parliament Building, Mo Runshu's territory; to actually make a move would confirm their "guilty conscience."
"Show him out." Mo Runshu uttered two words coldly, turned around and returned to the main seat, no longer looking.
The three exchanged a glance, each seeing the gloom and anger in the other's eyes. This game of chess had only just begun.
After they left, Yue Mianmian walked behind Mo Runshu and whispered, "By doing this, you're driving them all to the brink of despair."
"A dead end?" Mo Runshu looked out the window at the still-lit Mingdu, his golden hair fluttering in the wind. "Only by blocking one road can a new one be found. Mianmian, do you see that? The lifeline of the future is trembling violently. If we don't dig out these malignant tumors, Douluo Continent will be destroyed by them sooner or later."
He turned around, took Yue Mianmian's cold hand in his, and a hint of tenderness in his eyes. "And I also want to see just how far that child named Tang Wulin can go in this storm."
