Chapter 113 Ability Adaptation
Chapter 113 Ability Adaptation
In a private training room on the top floor of Stark Tower, Nick Fury's eyes were closed, and fine beads of sweat appeared on his forehead. Several metal fragments floated in the air around him, spinning irregularly with the slightest movement of his fingers.
"Focus, Fury," Chen Haotian instructed through the communicator from the observation window. "Magical energy is unlike any other form of energy you've encountered before. It's not controlled by logic, but by willpower and imagination."
Tony sat at the control panel, monitoring various data: "His brainwave activity is off the charts again. Fluctuations in magical energy are directly related to his emotional state; his energy field becomes unstable whenever he feels frustrated."
The metal fragments in the training room suddenly went out of control, scattering to the floor with a crash. Nick Fury opened his one eye, wearily rubbing his temples: "This is much harder than managing S.H.I.E.L.D. At least back then I knew what the rules were."
Chen Haotian walked into the training room and picked up a fragment: "The essence of magical ability is breaking the rules. The more you try to control it with logic, the more difficult it becomes to master."
"Easy for you to say," Nick Fury sighed. "You can see dozens of energy fields at the same time, hear countless electronic devices buzzing, and sense the emotional fluctuations of everyone around you. It's like watching hundreds of TV channels at once, and the remote control is broken."
Tony looked up from the console: "The data shows your brain is building new neural connections to adapt to this sensory capacity. This process takes time. We need to find a way to help you temporarily block out some sensations so you can gradually adapt."
Nick Fury shook his head: "No, if this is a necessary process, I don't want to take shortcuts. Tell me how to control it, not run from it."
Chen Haotian nodded approvingly: "Alright, let's try a different approach. Magical energy is closely related to the user's mental state. When you feel stressed, it gets out of control. So the first step is to learn to control your emotions."
"Controlling emotions?" Nick Fury raised an eyebrow. "In my past career, controlling emotions has been a fundamental skill."
"That's different." Chen Haotian gestured for him to focus again. "Now your emotions will directly affect reality. Try to recall a peaceful scene and let that sense of peace fill your consciousness."
Nick Fury closed his eyes and took a few deep breaths. A few seconds later, the air around him began to glow faintly blue, and the scattered metal fragments trembled slightly.
"Very good. Now slowly open your eyes and maintain that calm state," Chen Haotian instructed softly.
Nick Fury opened his eyes. The energy field around him was still clearly visible, but it no longer bothered him. He reached out, and a piece of metal flew steadily into his hand.
"Success!" Tony clapped at the observation window. "The energy fluctuations are stable within a safe range."
Over the next few hours, they underwent various adaptive training exercises. Nick Fury learned to maintain his magical senses while having normal conversations, to block out unnecessary energy signals, and even to use his magical senses to obtain additional information.
"Interesting," Nick Fury said during a training break. "I can now sense the operating status of every electronic device in the building. The coffee machine on the third floor is about to break down; its energy fluctuations indicate that one of its internal heating elements is about to fail."
Tony immediately sent people to check, and they confirmed Nick Fury's judgment.
"It seems this ability has great potential in practical applications," Chen Haotian pondered. "However, we must be careful; over-reliance on magical perception might affect your normal judgment."
By evening, Nick Fury had regained control of his abilities. He sat in the lounge area, sipping coffee and reading electronic reports, appearing no different than usual.
"How are you feeling?" Tony handed him a sandwich.
"Much better." Nick Fury took the food. "It's like learning to ride a bicycle; at first it's wobbly, but once you get your balance, it becomes natural. But..."
Before he could finish speaking, he suddenly frowned and turned to the east wall: "Something's not right over there."
Chen Haotian and Tony exchanged a glance, both becoming alert at the same time.
"Describe what you perceive," Chen Haotian said.
Nick Fury closed his eyes and focused: "It's not an energy signal... more like... a spatial fluctuation. Very faint, but it's definitely there."
The three immediately went to the location Nick Fury had indicated, which was a spare storage room in the building. After a careful inspection, they discovered a miniature surveillance device behind the wall.
"This isn't an ordinary listening device." Tony removed the device and examined it closely. "This technology...is not from Earth."
Chen Haotian took the device, his expression grave: "It seems we're not the only ones who know about the existence of the multiverse."
Nick Fury's magical perception unexpectedly helped them uncover a potential threat. This discovery made the trio realize that as their abilities grew, they might attract more and more attention.
"Tomorrow we'll go to the DC Universe to test your abilities," Chen Haotian decided. "Different cosmic rules might lead to new discoveries. But tonight, we need to solve the problem with this monitoring device first."
Tony has begun analyzing the device's technical features: "I need a few hours to track the signal source. Fury, your new ability might be helpful—if you can sense spatial fluctuations, you might be able to find the signal's transmission path."
Nick Fury nodded and focused again. This time, he wasn't distracted by the complex energy signals, but instead concentrated on finding that particular spatial fluctuation. A few minutes later, he pointed in a direction: "It came from over there, but the signal dropped midway, like through some kind of... portal."
Chen Haotian pondered, "It seems our actions have attracted the attention of certain entities. However, right now, mastering your abilities is the top priority."
Night fell, but the Stark Tower remained brightly lit. Nick Fury stood by the window, gazing down at the New York cityscape. Now, the city presented itself in a completely new light to him—not just the lights and buildings, but also the flowing energy and subtle spatial fluctuations. This world was far more complex than he had imagined, and he had stepped into a much broader reality.
